Myanmar Cyclone Relief

Dr. Maung Maung Yin, vice-principal of the Myanmar Institute of Theology in Yangon arrived on the Central Baptist Theological Seminary campus Monday, May 5, for a two-day visit. He came to discuss the timing of a student/faculty exchange and some future joint academic programs.  However, as the events in Myanmar (Burma) continued to unfold, conversations quickly moved to prayers for the thousands of people displaced, missing and killed by Cyclone Nargis.

President Molly Marshall and a group from Central who had visited some of the affected areas this past January wondered about the people they had met.  Dr. Yin wondered about the parishioners of his church, family and friends, and the seminary which was scheduled to begin classes in early June.

"So in the midst of all of our wondering we prayed.  We prayed that God would be with the people.  We prayed that the government would allow others to help.  We prayed for those least likely to have access to help.  We prayed, and we shared some tears.  And we continue to pray," said Dr. John Gravley, CBTS Executive Director of Stewardship.

American Baptist International Ministries is providing an initial $5,000 disaster relief grant through One Great Hour of Sharing to help victims with clean drinking water, non-perishable food, blankets and medical kits.  American Baptists wishing to support ongoing Myanmar efforts can do so through their church’s monthly report of mission support, designating contributions to "OGHS-Myanmar Cyclone."  For online contributions, go to the give now option available at www.abc-oghs.org/give.
